A Great Place For U

The sweet sound of train whistles is music to the ears of the City's Community and Economic Development Department.

In January, the Joplin-based Jaguar Transport Holdings announced they have taken over the operation of about 60 miles of rail including the 40-mile spur running from Union east into Maryland Heights.

The previous owner, A&K Railroad Materials, was dedicated to scrapping and selling parts of the Rock Island railway from Beaufort west to Kansas City.  If they continued dismantling the line east toward St. Louis, then several Union businesses, including Buddeez, Silgan Plastic Food Containers, Esselte (TOPS) and Hall Brothers Lumber would be forced to rely totally on trucking companies for shipping.

James Schmieder, Union's economic development director, said the shift in service and ownership is a big deal for Union.    Jaguar officials have shared their plans of improving the infrastructure of the railroad line and expanding services to other clients near Union.

We expect to see at least one train per day to Union five days a week.

Every time we hear that lonesome whistle blow, we hear success ... we see possibilities.   And, of course, who doesn't love trains?
